Designing ebook covers  - Keep it simple

ebook cover

When we talk of designing ebook covers, some think that an attractive cover should have a lot of colour and a lot of details. In short, the more complicated it is, the more attractive.

No, that is quite wrong.

Here is the secret to creating stunning ebook covers…listen carefully:

KIS.

Yes, Keep it Simple.

Your cover does not need to have a blend of all the colours of the rainbow to be attractive, nor does it need to be cluttered with detail.

Your cover has to:

  • Clearly convey its contents to your prospective buyer
  • Strike your buyer as a work of a professional (too much color will pass you off as an amateur).
  • Have a crispy, clear appearance – i.e have a high resolution.

How will you manage to do all this?

Not if your cover is looking like a rainbow or if it is clattered with too much text, no. But if it is simple, straight forward and clean, you are definitely going to attract those buyers that you so desire.

These are the few areas you should watch out for if your cover is to do the job it is made for:

  1. The background: It is good to have a background of a single color or texture. Too many colors or textures will confuse your buyers, because colours often convey a message ( more on this later).

  2.  Your text: prune out the irrelevant words. At most you should only include the title and your name (as the author). If you try to crowd too much text onto your cover, it will be too small to read, and your overall look and feel will be undermined.

  3. Insert one or more relevant pictures or photos. Ensure that they match with the background you have chosen. Avoid inserting too many graphcs if a different nature. One is fine, two is okay, three is too much…

If you follow these important rules, you are on your way to creating stunning covers. Always remember to keep it simple when designing ebook covers!
