The Sony Reader has paper like display features Background
The Sony Reader is an ebook Reader for the US market. The Reader uses current breakthrough technology which is almost paper like. The text can be magnified to help people with sight problems. This can be done up to 200% magnification. Other features include high resolution of 800 by 600, high contrast, daylight readable and near 180 degrees viewing angle.
The Sony Reader is smaller than paperbacks. It measures 6.9” by 4.9” by ˝ inch. It weighs 9 oz or 250g. With this size, you can move with it anywhere you go. It has 64MB internal memory, a slot for optional removable memory cards. These cards can help you take many ebooks, or any selected material for reading.
The Reader can also play unencrypted MP3 and ACC audio files through the headset which is not provided with the Reader. You cannot annotate a digital ebook because the Reader does not provide a keyboard.
It has a battery which can be recharged in 4 hours by using the AC adapter. When it is recharged, it will take you through 7,500 continuous page turns.
The software will allow you search for electronic books from the CONNECT EBooks( Sony's ebook Store ). The ebooks can be downloaded to your PC and then transferred to your Reader.
To read the books from the CONNECT eBooks, you need to have the CONNECT software installed on your PC. The memory of the Reader will hold approximately 160 books.
Application with other software
The Reader also displays Adobe PDFs, personal documents, RSS new feeds, blogs, and JPEGs with the same outstanding readability.
Using E Ink Technology
The software uses the E Ink technology in displaying the characters. The E Ink positively or negatively charged microcapsules appear either in black or white, depending on the charge determined by the content. The result? You enjoy the reading experience similar to that of paper, with high contrast and high resolution of about 800 by 600. You can also comfortably read in the sharpest direct sunlight.
Other Features
The DRM (Digital rights management) rules of the Reader allow the purchased ebook to be read on up to six devices. One of these devices must be a PC. You will not be able to share purchased ebooks on other people’s devices and accounts. However, you may register five Readers to your account and share your ebooks with them. You will be able to bookmark any page or multiple pages by pressing the “Mark” button which has been provided for this application.
The disadvantages
The Reader has been designed for Microsoft Windows XP. Therefore, it is not possible to connect to Apple Macintosh operating system.
Due to the way microcapsules work in the Reader, the screen slightly blacks out when you jump to read the next page. You cannot input or search data and it is not possible to read in the dark.
