The original creator of Plucker was Mr. Mark Lillywhite, from Australia. Initially Plucker was intended as a way of getting webpages in order to view them offline on handheld devices such as Palm Pilot.
The Plucker ebook reader contains POSIX tools, scripts and conduit which work on UNIX, Linux, Microsoft Windows and Apple OSX. With these tools you can decide which part of the web you would like to convert for reading on your PDA. This makes it possible to convert the web pages and transfer to your PDA for viewing by the Plucker viewer.
The content for Plucker can be created from many sources such as RSS, RDF, text files, HTML, and PDF. You can do this by using intelligent “distillers” written in common languages, such as Python, C++ and Perl.
The Plucker ebook reader is free software. It is licensed under GNU General Public License. Therefore, you can use it in your own projects or products without charge. You can give it away, modify the program or add any features you may deem fit, as long as you are in line with GPL.
Plucker has three parts:
Parser
This is the one which runs on your computer in order to gather web pages which are compressed into the Plucker document.
The Desktop
This is a GUI or graphical application. Through this you can create, manage, edit, convent your web pages or local files and ebooks to Plucker format.
The Viewer
This is the one which displays the converted html files on your Palm device’s screen. The application will help you view and read your converted Plucker content.
The viewer displays converted files on your Palm device’s screen. It allows you to use the stylus to tap on links which will then display the target page.
The Plucker’s viewer comes in many languages. It also has two formats, the hi-res and lo-res. The hi-res and lo-res are used for devices with high-resolution and low-resolution respectively.
